RANKING MARKS 17 STRAIGHT YEARS IN THE TOP 10 AMONG CITIES OF ITS SIZE

DAYTON, Ohio – Site Selection magazine announced Tuesday the Dayton Metro Area placed fifth among cities of its size for economic development projects in its annual Governor’s Cup rankings, marking the 17th consecutive year the region has ranked in the top 10.

“A month ago, we celebrated a second straight year of record job creation in 2022. Our many years in the top ten represent not only the hard work of economic development professionals throughout our community, but how the Dayton Region shapes its own future,” said Jeff Hoagland, President and CEO of the Dayton Development Coalition. “We have the industry, education, and talent to fuel growth. If you like great people, abundant resources, a central location, and a winning game plan, come join us in Dayton.”

Site Selection ranks cities and states each year based on the number of economic development projects in their region. Projects factored into the rankings include those with any combination of state, regional and local incentives, as well as those that do not receive any type of assistance. This year’s results indicate a strong state and regional business climate.

“The Dayton Region continues to attract new businesses and investment from around the word thanks to our strong business climate, wonderful quality of life and talented workforce, but what really sets us apart is our ability to collaborate” said Debbie Lieberman, President of the Montgomery County Commission. “Our established tenure in the top ten is a tribute to the work of our regional partners to build a diverse economy and create great jobs for our residents.”

In 2022, the Dayton Region saw an increasing number of new companies establish operations in the region, as well as growth from existing companies, including, Sierra Nevada Corp., Radiance Technologies, Epsilon C5I, and TJX Digital.

“The Dayton Region should be extremely proud of its strong finish in the Governor’s Cup. This is a real testament to our local economic development professionals” said Doug Compton, Chair of the Coalition’s Board of Trustees and Dayton City Executive at Fifth Third Bank. “As we strive to grow and diversify our regional economy, this recognition highlights our team’s effort to grow the region’s economy and connect businesses to the resources they need to succeed.”

Ohio ranked third among all states for total projects and was third in the nation for projects per capita. Ohio has placed in the top three for more than 10 years, cementing the state’s role as a leader in job creation and business expansion. The state’s economic development efforts are led by JobsOhio, a private non-profit. The DDC is one of JobsOhio’s six regional network partners.

“With an economic driver like Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in our backyard, it’s no surprise the Dayton Region continues to be among the top communities in the nation for growth,” said Rick Perales, President of the Greene County Commission. “Embracing Wright-Patt’s mission, supporting its workforce, and working to make the region and state a friendly place for our military, military families and veterans is at the core of our region’s economic development efforts.”

The Dayton Region saw several communities earn spots on the magazine’s list for Micropolitans, including Sidney in third place, Greenville in fifth, Celina in 22nd, Wapakoneta in 28th and Wilmington in 77th.

“The Dayton Region has the right formula and people as noted by its proven track record to consistently bring economic growth and jobs year over year. Placing in the top tier of the prestigious Governor’s Cup reflects the thought leadership, dedication and collaboration of our economic development professionals,” said Kristina Lund, AES Ohio President and CEO. “Our team is embracing and accelerating the future right here in our region”.

The Atlanta-based magazine has awarded the Governor’s Cup annually since 1988, based on new and expanded corporate facilities as tracked by the proprietary Conway Projects Database. The DDC works with local economic development officials and JobsOhio to provide information on regional expansion projects to use for the rankings.

In 2022, companies committed to create more than 5,934 new jobs and keep more than 6,865 jobs in the 12-county Dayton Region. Many of the projects this year were new companies establishing operations in the region, helping to further diversify our economy. Those projects will generate more than $357.5 million in new payroll and $5.5 billion in capital investment. The numbers represent companies that worked with the DDC and JobsOhio to expand or establish new operations in the region.

“Thanks to the collaborative efforts of the JobsOhio network, along with our local economic development partners, community leaders, and government officials, Ohio welcomed new industries, next-generation innovations, and statewide economic development at a pace and scale never seen in the history of our state,” said JobsOhio President and CEO J.P. Nauseef. “Team Ohio is winning for Ohioans today and for generations to come,”
