With a unique combination of federal research, excellent academic cyber centers, strong cyber industries, and a waiting customer base, the Dayton Region is home to many institutions designated as Centers of Academic Excellence in Cyber by the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security. The Region is also home to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), headquarters of the Air Force Research Lab, National Air and Space Intelligence Center, Air Force Materiel Command, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, and the Air Force Institute of Technology. WPAFB is leading the development of AI, autonomous and cyberresilient systems.

OARnet: Ohio's Fiber Backbone

More than 2,240 miles of highly scalable, fiber-optic cable

Ohio Academic Research Network (OARnet) provides one of the nation’s most advanced, statewide telecommunications networks. OARnet’s network backbone of more than 2,240 miles of highly scalable, fiber-optic cable connects users in research, academia, industry and government in Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Toledo and provides those communities with Ethernet capacity of 100 gigabits per second, while the remainder of the network backbone provides bandwidth of 10 gigabit per second. Cyber industries can use OARnet to accelerate the development of cyber tool and products, cyber resilience testing and product certification.

Ohio Cyber Collaboration Committee (OC3)

OC3 is a statewide collaboration of 200 representatives from public, private, military and educational organizations. OC3 uses the Ohio Academic Research Network (OARNet) to support cyber education and provide an environment for public and private entities to test and measure the performance of cyber-physical systems. OC3 is also developing a Cyber Emergency Response Team can be mobilized to halt a cyber attack, recover and restore operations and prevent similar attacks from occurring.

Ohio Cyber Range Institute

A virtual environment used for cybersecurity training and technology development, Ohio Cyber Range uses the Ohio Academic Research Network (OARnet) to support cyber education. The Cyber Range provides an environment for public and private entities to test and measure the performance of cyber-physical systems.

Ohio Cyber Reserve

A volunteer cyber force under the direction and support of the Adjutant General’s Department, Ohio Cyber Reserve (OhCR) is composed of trained, vetted Ohio civilians, the OhCR operates similar to the Ohio National Guard during a natural disaster. The OhCR can assist eligible small governments stop cyber attacks, recover and restore operations, and prevent future attacks. The OhCR can also help small municipalities conduct vulnerability testing on their computer systems. The team has a cyber education mission to inform students about the inherent dangers of online activities. The OhCR encourages ethical cyber-related behavior and host interactive activities, such as cyber “capture the flag” competitions at high schools, colleges and universities, to encourage interest in those fields of study.
