DDC 2023 Annual Meeting + Economic Review
Dayton Development Coalition Celebrates Record Year!
The Dayton Development Coalition (DDC) celebrated an historic year in 2023 at its Annual Meeting + Economic Review on Wednesday. The region saw the second-highest numbers for jobs committed and capital investment and set a record for new payroll.
“There’s no better time to be in the Dayton Region,” said DDC President and CEO Jeff Hoagland. “What aerospace company or industry professional wouldn’t want to come to a community with Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, SNC, and now Joby Aviation? Whether they want to support our national defense, join the efforts to transform how we power our vehicles, or continue to innovate the future of flight, the Dayton Region offers life-changing opportunities.”
In 2023, companies committed to create more than 5,200 new jobs and keep more than 5,800 jobs in our region. About a third of the 39 projects were defense contractors establishing new operations or expanding in our community. Those projects will generate more than $383 million in new payroll and $1 billion in capital investment. The numbers represent companies that worked with the DDC and JobsOhio to expand or establish new operations in the region.
Lt. Governor Jon Husted addressed the sold-out gathering of more than 650 community and business leaders, followed by a panel discussion with Didier Papadopoulos, Head of Aircraft OEM for Joby Aviation and John Piatt, Executive Vice President, ISR, Aviation & Security (IAS) for SNC about their companies’ plans in Ohio.
“The local businesses and education institutions have worked well together to propel the Dayton region forward,” said Lt. Governor Jon Husted. “The key to keeping the momentum going is to continue to be a great place to do business and develop talent. If the region can produce that talent, even more businesses will come.”
The panel highlighted two transformational projects for the Dayton Region. In September, Joby Aviation announced it will build an electric air taxi manufacturing facility in the region, creating 2,000 new jobs, marking a return to aircraft manufacturing for the first time in a century.
SNC celebrated the opening of the SNC Aviation Innovation and Technology Center (AITC) in February 2023. It is the first large aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility constructed in the Dayton region since WWII. SNC broke ground on the facility in February 2022.
“We picked the perfect venue to hear about two aviation projects that take the Dayton Region back to our aerospace manufacturing roots while at the same time pushing the limits of aviation technology.” said DDC Board of Trustees Chair Doug Compton. “We don’t want to lose that momentum.”
Announcing we'll build our first scaled manufacturing facility in Dayton is a huge win for Joby and we hope to have a very positive impact on the local economy. The spirit of collaboration amongst the Ohio team as we made our decision was phenomenal and they consistently solved for the challenges we faced.
This is an exciting time to be in Dayton with significant meaningful growth and new opportunities ahead. SNC chose to expand in Dayton with our Aviation & Innovation Technology Center (AITC) because of the region’s infrastructure, quality workforce and proximity to key customers.
